Silver Screen: The Boys and Girls Club Night at the Oscars
What: Night at the Oscars (trivia night and silent art auction benefit)
To coincide with the Academy Awards broadcast each February, the Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale holds its own Night at the Oscars. This year’s event, which includes a movie-trivia contest, takes place Thursday, February 23 at 6 p.m. at the Copper Dragon Brewing Company.
“It’s a fun event, and we think that by having the addition of the movie trivia throughout the evening that we can expand our audience to include people who may not know too much about the club but who are more trivia fans,” Kathie Fralish, president of the board of the Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale, tells Nightlife.
Trivia questions in ten different categories will be asked throughout the evening. Each team will come up with their answers, and will get a score based on how many answers they get correct. The table with most points will win the trivia contest. The winning table will receive wine, movie tickets, and souvenir Oscar trophies.
In addition to the trivia portion of the evening, Great Boars of Fire will cater a dinner, the Copper Dragon will provide a cash bar, and a silent auction and fifty/fifty raffle will take place.
Another contest will allow individuals to purchase tickets to place in buckets representing the different Oscar nominees. Once the Oscar winners are announced on February 26, a ticket will be drawn from the bucket representing that particular film. The person whose ticket is drawn will win a recliner from the Furniture King.
Boys and Girls Club board member Greg Scott says that while the evening is about enjoyment, it’s important to remember the cause behind it.
The club provides numerous opportunities for local youth in five core areas, including character and leadership development, education and career development, health and life skills, the arts, and sports, fitness, and recreation.
"The Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale has loyal supporters in this community,” Scott says. “This has quickly become an event that they look forward to. It presents an opportunity for community members to come together in support of a worthwhile cause, and have an enjoyable evening in the process."
“It’s a really fun evening that results in additional funding for the Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale,” Fralish adds.
Admission to the event is $35 per person, and $280 to reserve a table for eight.
