On Thursday, February 24, the Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale will hold the fourth annual Tribute to the Oscars at the Copper Dragon Brewing Company. It's one of the several events held every year to benefit the organization and its dedication to helping local youth.

The event will feature a number of Oscar-themed activities, including movie-trivia games with prizes and a fifty/fifty raffle. Participants will also have a chance to cast their vote for the Best Picture of the ten nominees. Winners will receive an awards package, which will include a recliner from the Furniture King.

A unique activity held during the evening is Lights, Camera, Action!. Participants break into groups of three or four people and choose a scene from four different films: The Wizard of Oz, Forrest Gump, Casablanca, and The Blind Side. The groups then act out their scenes, videotape them, and screen them for the entire crowd. The group with the best scene has the chance to win a novelty Best Actor/Best Actress Oscar.

There will also be a silent auction, a cash bar courtesy of the Copper Dragon, and dinner catered by Great Boars of Fire.

But while the evening is designed to entertain, Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale board president Kathie Fralish reminds the public that the event has another important purpose.

"I think that while our events typically are a lot of fun and people always say they have a good time, the most important reason that people give us for coming is that they want to show their support for the Boys and Girls Club," Fralish says. "The work that we do in the community for our members as well as other young people in the community really touches the heart of many people."

The Boys and Girls Club's mission is to inspire and enable all young people, especially at-risk youth, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens. The club accomplishes this through the Five Core Programs-- Character and Leadership Development, Education and Career Development, Health and Life Skills, the Arts, and Sports, Fitness, and Recreation.

The Tribute to the Oscars begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are $35, or $280 for a table of eight. Tickets must be purchased in advance, and are available by contacting Diane Hood at (618) 303-5974.
