While there will be plenty of events throughout Southern Illinois this weekend during Veterans Day, there is one more to keep on the calendar as part of Southern Illinois’ annual fall traditions.

The John A. Logan Autumnfest is held from 9 a.m. to p.m., Saturday, Nov. 11 and 10 a.m., to 4 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 12. Admission is free.

The annual event, always hosted the second week in November by the community college, features arts and crafts handmade by local artisans, with a focus toward preholiday gift sales.

The festival began in 1976, with this being its 39th year. This year, artists and vendors from throughout central and Southern Illinois will be present to showcase their work. More than 120 vendors will be participating, with about 20 new artisans in the mix this year. A play area is available for children during the event, with face painting and arts and crafts activities.

Attendees can expect to find a unique and fun selection of jewelry, specialty food items, holiday decorations, toys, clothing, home décor and craft items, purses, and even pet accessories.

The event has a Pinterest site this year where folks can preview the available items. Links to the artisans’ websites are available along with pictures of their products. Take a look at the myriad wonderful artists and items which will be available at the show at www.pinterest.com/jalcstudentacti/boards/.

In addition to the sales at the festival, the John A. Logan Student Senate hosts a silent auction at the event. Items for auction have been donated by the artisans participating. Proceeds from the auction benefit the Angel Tree Project, which is project to provide underprivileged children in Southern Illinois with Christmas gifts and needed items.   In 2016, more than 7,000 attendees joined the fun at the festival. The event, organized by the Office of Student Activities and Cultural Events at John A. Logan College, is also offering flu and pneumonia vaccines to interested attendees. VNA-TIP will be on-hand from 10 a.m., until 2 p.m., on Saturday and 1 p.m., until 4 p.m., on Sunday to administer the vaccines. Pneumonia vaccines will cost $45 and flu vaccines, $25. Pairing this feature with a high volume event at the beginning of flu and pneumonia season will help to stave off illness over the holidays.
