Atomic Blonde (R, ***): This hyperstylized tale of Cold War spycraft behind the Berlin Wall is director David Leitch’s followup to the popular John Wick franchise he cocreated. A similar aesthetic pervades here, and the fight choreography is top-notch. Alas, it’s all in service of a storyline so routine it seems like a Central Intelligence Agency plot to bore audiences to death. A secret agent must infiltrate a shadowy network of spies to recover a missing list hidden inside a watch that could give away the secrets of dozens of fellow spies. Luckily for Leitch, the secret agent in question is played by the dynamite Charlize Theron. He shoots her like a literal star from whom all neon light emanates, and the role is a perfect combination of her sex-bomb glamour and surprising grittiness. A slew of great actors, including James McAvoy, John Goodman, and Toby Jones, are wasted in generic roles. Nothing much matters here but watching Charlize kick ass to a nostalgic soundtrack of late 1980s rock hits. If you can just focus on that part, mission accomplished.

The Dark Tower (PG-13, 1/2*): This dire attempt at adapting Stephen King’s seven-book genre-bending fantasy epic takes a strange approach. When confronted with the challenge of translating a sprawling, elaborate mythology, director Nicolaj Arcel and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman throw out almost all of it and create their own mumbo-jumbo. The result is one of the worst movies of the year, a head-scratching oddity that makes viewers feel like they missed something without ever really showing them anything at all. A troubled kid (Tom Taylor) hops through a portal to a parallel universe to escape an evil wizard (Matthew McConaughey) who’s trying to use the boy’s psychic powers to destroy a tower whose existence prevents a swarm of demons from invading the earth. The boy partners up with Roland (Idris Elba), the last in a line of gunslingers sworn to protect the tower. Both bizarre and boring, this would-be blockbuster dud feels like a bunch of character names and settings shoved into a Franchise Generator that craps out generic spectacle, but it’s tough to imagine anything in this mess that would tantalize anyone into wanting a sequel.

Dunkirk (PG-13, ****): Christopher Nolan, acclaimed director and hero to twenty-four-year-old white guys with film-studies degrees everywhere, has spent most of his movies in the deep realms of the unreal. Here the cerebral filmmaker makes his first attempt at serious historical fiction (no quasi-mystical David Bowie takes on Tesla here) with a stunning recreation of the battle of Dunkirk. He applies his distinctive aesthetic to great effect in what amounts to more of a tone poem à la Terrence Malick’s The Thin Red Line than a standard war story. Nolan follows a disparate ensemble of characters, mostly anonymous British soldiers and civilian volunteers, to convey the scope of the battle from land, sea, and air. The most notable characters include Tom Hardy’s Spitfire pilot, Kenneth Branagh’s stoic naval commander, Mark Rylance as the epitome of British dutifulness, and Cillian Murphy as a shell-shocked soldier overwhelmed with emotion. Nolan still separates the audience from the visceral realities of war with a layer of abstraction that makes the movie both more intellectually interesting and less affecting. Still, his stirring images win the day in this flawed but singular war film.

< Forty-seven Meters Down (PG-13, ***): Mandy Moore and Clair Holt play sisters on a bonding trip to Mexico whose swim-with-the-sharks adventure turns terrifying when their shark cage breaks free and sinks to the bottom of the ocean. Writer/director Johannes Roberts mostly uses the confines of the tight setting for claustrophobic scares, turning the lightless depths into a spin on haunted-house darkness where a monster lurks somewhere out of sight. He’s perhaps a bit too enamored of plot twists, the sharks are more menacing in shadow than up close, and the actresses’ faces are obscured for most of the movie by cumbersome diving masks that at times reduce them to what is essentially voiceover acting. But even though its sharpest edges have been sanded down to PG-13 standards, the movie still has plenty of glorified B-movie thrills. Anyone holding their breath through The Shallows or even the more existential, slow-paced fright of Open Water will squirm in their seats as Moore and Holt face a dwindling air supply and toothy terror from all sides.

Spider-Man: Homecoming (PG-13, ***): Marvel’s reboot of Spider-Man takes a leap forward and a step back. The filmmakers skip the tedious, twice-told origin story and catch up with an already superpowered Peter Parker (Tom Holland) who has also been de-aged back to a high-school sophomore. Here he contends with more mundane teenage crises involving his crush (Laura Harrier) and his overprotective aunt (Marisa Tomei) while balancing those with a mentorship by Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and a brewing rivalry with Adrian Toomes (Michael Keaton), a vindictive blue-collar worker turning scrapped alien technology into superweapons. The comedy and the character development work better than the sub-par action sequences, which are often grandiose without being especially thrilling. Director Jon Watts and enough screenwriters to repopulate the Avengers run the story through the Mighty Marvel Homogenizer and come out with something at least a bit more distinctive. It’s flawed but a web-sling in the right direction.

War for the Planet of the Apes (PG-13, **): Matt Reeves’s followup to his hugely ambitious, excellent sequel to the thoughtful Planet of the Apes reboot is a wonderment of technical accomplishment and an absolute misfire of storytelling. The movie looks absolutely fantastic, and the motion-capture technology allows terrific performances by Andy Serkis and Steve Zahn as photo-realistic primates to be as subtle and nuanced as Woody Harrelson’s turn as the bald, bluntly Kurtzian human villain. Maybe more so, not so much the fault of Harrelson but because of the grim script, which flattens the earlier, far more interesting moral quandaries into a too-familiar revenge quest that adds almost nothing to the concept or scope of the series. It’s an admirable bit of filmmaking but a lousy piece of storytelling and a bummer of a conclusion to what was otherwise one of the most interesting and innovative entries in a field crowded with shoddy reboots.

Wonder Woman (PG-13, ****): It’s hard to argue that we need more superhero movies, but the dearth of women-centric comic-book fare gives this movie its reason for being. Patty Jenkins more than delivers on the promise, making the first DC movie in a long time to live up to the status of its icon, Princess Diana (Gal Gadot), who ventures off her all-women island paradise to help a wayward World War I pilot (Chris Pine) return home so she can stop the war. A sluggish start and an uninspired climax keep the movie from being great, but there’s greatness in star Gadot and in Jenkins’s overall vision, which delivers the first genuinely inspiring hero in a long time. Wonder Woman is a character to whom audiences can both aspire and relate, and the scenes of her battling through No Man’s Land in the trenches of the Great War are thrilling. This is smart, bombastic stuff, transcending the ubiquity of the superhero movie-industrial complex with the help of an ace supporting cast that includes Robin Wright, Connie Nielsen, Elena Anaya, David Thewlis, and Danny Huston.

> The Nut Job II: Nutty by Nature (PG): In this sequel to the poorly received computer-animated original, some squirrels team up with fellow animals from the local nature preserve to keep it from being turned into an amusement park. Featuring a lot of celebrity voices. Like, a whole bunch, so many you might feel temporarily validated about seeing a sequel to The Nut Job.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (PG-13): Fifth Element writer/director Luc Besson tries his hand again at visually extravagant sci-fi with this comic-book adaptation about a pair of investigators (Cara Delevingne and Dane DeHaan) fighting to save an intergalactically diverse metropolis. Featuring Clive Owen, Rihanna, and Ethan Hawke.
