An annual search for the best band to represent the area returns this weekend.

The Summer Camp Music Festival’s On the Road tour is a series of showcases throughout the country, where area bands battle it out to win a spot to play in the annual festival. This year stops have included Columbus, Ohio; Morgantown, West Virginia; Peoria and Chicago; Indianapolis; Madison, Wisconsin; Davenport, Iowa; Denver; and Lafayette, Indiana.

The tour makes a pitstop Friday, March 3 at the Hangar 9.

This year’s local On the Road lineup once again displays the eclectic talent that plays around the area on any given weekend: jamgrass outfit Porch Fire, funky jam rockers Big Atomic, the rock grit of Monolithic, jam-fusion rockers Chromophonic, and producer, DJ, and guitarist MCMC.

Tour director Jason Miles said the Summer Camp On the Road tour provides an opportunity for the music festival to keep its pulse on trends in different Midwest markets.

“It gives us a chance to see what is popular in different areas,” Miles said. “The bands get to bring their fans and show us what they got in hopes of making it to the big stage at the festival.”

In 2001, the first Summer Camp Music Festival brought about one-thousand patrons to Three Sisters Park in Chillicothe, Illinois, to see more than fifteen bands on two stages across a two-day event. This year, the party continues throughout Memorial Day Weekend with more than twenty-thousand attendees expected to watch one-hundred bands performing on seven stages. The 2017 lineup includes moe., Umphrey’s McGee, the Trey Anastasio Band, Pretty Lights Live, Zed’s Dead, Primus, Gov’t Mule, Run the Jewels, the Disco Biscuits, Mike Gordon, and the Claypool Lennon Delirium.

Miles said numerous bands have won their way onto the Summer Camp stage and then been asked to return for another featured spot at the next year’s festival. One local band that did so was Spread, which has since played regularly at subsequent Summer Camp Music Festivals. And there is always potential for history to repeat itself.
